1 Workshop for P1 parents Wednesday 9th September 2015

2  To look at an example of a typical day in Primary 1  To share our new approach to literacy in Primary 1  To highlight the key aspects of learning in numeracy and share some examples of numeracy activities  To give parents / carers the opportunity to explore key resources and ask questions

4  Soft Start Play in P1 is a timetabled part of the day. Every child has an opportunity to learn through play within the day. It is not just used as an activity for quick finishers, but a valuable part of the school experience.

5  Short inputs to differentiated groups in Literacy and Numeracy,  IDL related lessons, singing games, circle time.  Story Time Daily opportunities to hear stories  Stations Time to reinforce and extend learning in key areas. Range of experiences provided for children to try. Variety of independent, small group, adult led; ICT included.  Self Assessment Children encouraged to think about their learning and feedback to adults on progress.

Foundation for reading and writing Synthetic phonics methods – children learn how to use the letter sounds to read and write words. 42 main sounds in English language Children will be taught these at a pace appropriate the them. Tricky words taught alongside

15  As soon as the first 6 sounds are known, children can start to build words on their own.

16  Encourage writing in all contexts. Have a go.  Letter formation.  More formal writing lessons. Expose to different types of writing e.g. personal, functional, imaginative, news items, list, letter, report.  Common words.

21  “Having a go” As long as SOUND is correct, spelling is taken as correct at this stage eg plai (play) flie (fly) mee (me)  First skill is being able to HEAR the sounds in a word. Do lots of practice clapping out SOUNDS s-a-t ch-a-t  NB catch = c-a-ch (Silent t)
