3 THE ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS  The Era of Good Feelings marked a period in the political history of the United States that reflected a sense of national purpose and a desire for unity among Americans.

4 THE ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS  The era saw the collapse of the Federalist Party in the aftermath of the War of 1812 and an end to the bitter partisan disputes between it and the dominant Democratic-Republican Party during the First Party System.

5 THE ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS  However there was a nationalizing trend that envisioned “a permanent federal role in the crucial arena of national development and national prosperity.”  Thus adopting a major tenet of the Federalist platform.

6 MADISON AND MONROE  The two presidents associated with the Era of Good Feelings were James Madison (1809-1817) and James Monroe (1817-1826).

7 FURTHERING AMERICAN INTERESTS  Monroe Doctrine (warned Europeans that US was closed to colonization and not to interfere. American System  Henry Clay, Great Compromiser  Roads (National Road)  Canals (Erie Canal, NYC with replace Baltimore as major port in US)  Tariffs  Series of internal improvements that would help the US become self-sufficient
