2 Health service utilization among older new Americans: A cross-cultural community-based study of immigrants and refugees in St. Louis Immediate goals: To identify barriers to health services use and health concerns among older adults in the local Chinese and Bosnian communities

4  Three unique samples: ▪ Bosnian (Bosnia-Herzegovina) ▪ Chinese ▪ U.S. born  Primary method: focus groups and questionnaires

5  We connected with complimentary interests Aging, memory, health (Willoughby) Immigration, urban issues (Matsuo)

6  Planning started in 2008  Applications for external & internal funding ▪ Single population (Bosnian) ▪ Rejected, but not discouraged ▪ Listened to feedback ▪ Expanded focus: Included Chinese community (success in 2010!)

7  Understanding the population context is key  Culture, language, and trust  Relationships in the Bosnian Community ▪ Hisako Matsuo: Many years to develop existing relationships  Relationships in the Chinese Community ▪ NEW: Took over 1 year … still developing relationships  Relationships with organizations that serve immigrants ▪ OLD and NEW: Has taken a long time to develop (still developing)

8  Phase 0: Identified gaps in the literature and met with community partners to discuss the plan (pre-submission)  Phase 1: Refined procedures with feedback from community partners  Phase 2: Data collection  Phase 3: Disseminate information in communities through fora  Phase 4: Discuss future directions with partners

9  Essential personnel hired from the community  All stages: planning, execution, and review of results  Partners are welcome to use the study findings in their efforts to secure funding  Community forum
