5 How to Read Interactively 1.Number the paragraphs. 2.In pencil or pen, circle key terms and unfamiliar words. Write informal definitions (or explanations) in the margins. 3.Highlight the author’s major claims and supporting details. 4.In the margins... oOn the left side, write a summary sentence for each paragraph. oOn the right side, write questions for 3 paragraphs. oWrite two of your own claims + reasons (things you have noticed and think are true about male/female brains) in the space at the end of the article.

6 Paragraph 1 Research in evolutionary psychology and related fields has uncovered the distinct ways that men’s minds and women’s minds operate. Few have made greater contribution to the discovery of the “male brain” and the “female brain” than Simon Baron-Cohen of the University of Cambridge, Bernard Crespi of Simon Fraser University, and my esteemed LSE colleague Christopher Badcock. So what is the male brain? What is the female brain? Development of the brain across centuries / millennia

8 Paragraph 2 The male brain is characterized by systemizing tendencies and mechanistic thinking. “Systemizing” is the drive to analyze, explore, and construct a system. The systemizer intuitively figures out how things work, or extracts the underlying rules that govern the behavior of a system. The purpose of this is to understand and predict the system, or to invent a new one. Habit of thinking of how things can be built—parts into a whole. Think of individual parts working together.
