NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk The cards on the next slides are the ones that you have been given to sort out. On the next slide are the headings that I have come up with to sort my cards. Do they match yours? If not they can be used as an example of a way in which they can be sorted. Click on each of the headings and all the cards within that category will appear. Discuss the reasons for your grouping of the cards. Why is Jayna doing Elizabeth’s job?

NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Lesson Five Factory example Jayna/LEDCs. Factory conditions Elizabeth/MEDCs

NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Shirt production may be £4 instead of £11. Factory closed its doors in March 2007. Loss of 300 jobs. Factory example Factory set to move to China. “Taking the work to a country where the terms and conditions of employment are inferior. Company made £170 million (estimate) the previous year. Environmental cost of now shipping a shirt half way around the world will be costly. Switching production of polo shirts from Treorchy to China after deciding that the South Wales plant is not commercially viable. Operations as the current factory started in 1989.

NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Jayna is 15 years old. Jayna’s company provides accommodation, but it is small and she shares it with 5 others. Cheaper to run in other countries such as Asia. Information about Jayna/LEDCs Jayna would like to give up her work in a factory and go home but she can’t afford to. The money paid on clothes doesn’t go to the factory workers it goes straight to the brand. Jayna moved away from her family a few months ago as there was no work in her village. Work in Asia/China is cheaper due to a low skilled workforce. Jayna barely earns enough to pay her rent. Can produce cheaper goods and then make a profit on them.

NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Standard of living is very high in the UK. Elizabeth can no longer afford to go on holidays abroad every year. Elizabeth is looking for other sewing work but all the factories are closing. Elizabeth lives with her husband and has 3 children. People expect and want too much in the UK. Elizabeth left school with few qualifications; she worked in a factory making polo shirts. Elizabeth/ MEDCs

NGfL CYMRU GCaD www.ngfl-cymru.org.uk Can employ people under 16 If asked to work overtime, you can be sacked if you refuse. You work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. You earn £4 a day for working for 12 hours. The benefits such as maternity leave and sick pay don’t exist so the company saves money. Information about the factory conditions
