3 Read Aloud Cliff Hanger by Jean Craighead George
Today I will read you a few pages from a book that is part of our classroom library. As I read, THINK about what traits you would use to describe Axel. Cliff Hanger is part of your classroom library set. Read just enough pages to help students think about how they would describe Axel. PLAN ahead of time what kids might say

4 Synonyms and Antonyms Synonyms- a word that means almost the same as another word. Antonyms- a word that means the opposite of another word You can sometimes use synonyms or antonyms to help you figure out the meaning of an new word. T62

5 Synonyms and Antonyms A Thesaurus is a reference source that is helpful in finding additional synonyms and antonyms. Antonyms for hot Synonyms for hot T62 I would also show students a Real Thesaurus (could check out one from library) Sweltering Sizzling scorching Cold Freezing Frigid

Partner Work: Decide if the underlined words are synonyms or antonyms. Use the 1st underlined word to figure out the meaning of the 2nd underlined word. Bolivia was hungry Rory was ravenous, too. Give each group a Thesaurus and an assigned word and have them work together to web either synonyms or antonyms of their word.

10 pact A pact is an agreement between people or countries in which they promise to do certain things. If one country breaks a pact with another country, what might the result me? Routine on page T35: Read Vocabulary word, Students repeat word, read the definition, have students discuss the question (turn and talk) I would move the READ: vocabulary pages to Day 2

11 queasy If you feel queasy, you have a sick feeling in your stomach.
Which would make you feel more queasy, competing in a spelling bee or diving off the high dive into the swimming pool? WHY?

12 foisted If something is foisted on you, it is given to you whether you want it or not. How would you feel if friends of your family came to visit and foisted their 4 year old on you for the day?

13 venture A new venture is a project that is exciting and even risky.
What new venture might you like to start someday? WHY?

14 annoyed To be annoyed means to be somewhat angry about something.
Describe a time when you were annoyed by a sound.

15 depriving If someone is depriving you of something, the person is keeping you from having it. What is one effect of depriving a garden of water?
