15.  Follow our process. Cross out any prepositional phrases, label the subject with a “S”, and then label the type of verb (Action (AV), linking (LV), or verb phrase (VP). 1. Some people want jobs that take them outside the realm of ordinary experience. 2. Grace Wiley had one of those careers. 3. Wiley was a well-known herpetologist, an expert on snakes.  Draw an arrow to the word that the prepositional phrase is modifying (telling where or what). 4. She had one of the world’s largest collections of snakes. 5. She kept her snakes in the barn behind her house.  Write a sentence using at least 2 prepositional phrases. One phrase must be at the beginning with a comma after it.  Example: After the town picnic, the girls went to church to help decorate the gym with streamers.

16.  The boldfaced words help tell the story of a man who is given another chance. Figure out the meaning of the word by using the context clues in each of the phrases.  Ms. West will act out the vocabulary as we read through them as a class.  Make sure you are writing a definition in your own words

17.  Now read the opening paragraph on page 236, and then discuss the question.  Who might decide to give someone a second chance?  With your elbow partner, think of one or two individuals who could have used a second chance. Perhaps it’s a coach who had a losing season. Maybe it’s someone who betrayed a friend’s secret. What criteria could be used to determine whether that person deserves a second chance?

18.  What are the types of point of view?  How can you identify the point of vies in passages?  Can you identify which point of view the passage that Ms. West is reading is?  What was the evidence that helped you figure it out?  Predict: How the student in the example will feel when she hears the news?

30.  Before you turn in any written response questions, a student will be grading your work to make sure that you followed the four steps to writing a short answer response.  They will pick apart your questions to help you become a better writer.  You will make the corrections and then turn in your answers to all three short stories on Friday.
