2 Importance of leadership Leadership is central to improving performance, redesigning services and securing better outcomes for the people of Scotland (Better Health, Better Care, Scottish Government, 2007, p14) The quality of leadership impacted on outcomes for people who use social work services (SWIA Report 2010, p108) 2

3 About the guide It provides an introduction to an outcomes-focused approach and how to lead staff (primarily social services practitioners) to practice in this way. Builds on the evidence-base around outcomes, including Talking Points Aimed at those in a position to lead staff including team leaders, managers and trainers. The idea is that they will use the guide to train their staff. 3

4 The guide includes: – knowledge of effective team leadership – evidence relating to the achievement of outcomes for people who use services and their unpaid carers – training materials: exercises, scenarios, case studies – audit tool – adapt the manual to team needs 4
