5-1 Monomials Objectives Students will be able to: 1)Multiply and divide monomials 2)Use expressions written in scientific notation

Terminology Monomial: an expression that is a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables – Monomials cannot contain: 1) Variables in denominators 2) Variables with exponents that are negative 3) Variables under radicals

Constant: monomial that does not contain a variable – Examples: 23; -1; 0; 1,256 Coefficient: the numerical factor of a monomial – Example: The coefficient of -3x is -3. Degree of a monomial: sum of the exponents of its variables – Example: has a degree of 11 Power: expression of the form, with x being the base, and n being the power (exponent).

Rules for Simplifying Monomials

Scientific Notation The way we are used to writing our numbers is what is referred to as standard notation. Scientific notation is a way of writing very small or very large numbers. Numbers in scientific notation take on the form When simplifying scientific notation expressions, follow the same rules as when simplifying monomial expressions.
