History Of Atoms By: Dana Zahra 7D

Atoms Atoms are the building block of all matter and are the simplest form of molecule. They are all made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. They look something like this: The nucleus: This contains neutrons and protons. Electrons: These orbit around the nucleus

The ideas of the structure of the atom changed over time.
Timeline The ideas of the structure of the atom changed over time.

Democritus BC 450BC One of the first scientists to study the Atom, he thought that all atoms are made of small indestructible particles, and that there are an many atoms and are all in different shapes and sizes.

1803 AD He found out that different elements have different atoms and that all atoms of the same element are identical. John Dalton AD

Eugene Goldstein 1886 AD He discovered the existence of the proton and the positively charged particles.

Joseph John Thomson 1856-1940 1897 AD
Joseph Thomson discovered the electron. He also invented the Plum-Pudding model, in his model electrons and protons are mixed together.

1905 AD Einstein found out the light was an amount of energy called photons. Albert Einstein )

Robert Millikan 1909 AD Robert found out the actual charge and weight of an Electron.

Ernest Rutherford 1911 AD In his Gold-Foil experiment he discovered that the atom was mostly empty but had a solid center that is the nucleus.

Niels Bohr 1913 AD Bohr discovered that electrons are found in circular paths called orbits which move around the nucleus.

Louis de Broglie 1892–1987 1923 AD He found out an equation which shows that particles of matter sometimes behave as waves.

Erwin Schrödinger 1926 AD He invented an equation which could describe energy waves.

1932 AD He discovered the other part of a nucleus of an atom that has no electrical charge called the neutron. James Chadwick

The ideas of the structure of the atom have changed over time since the technology and sources have improved and also by taking another idea of someone else and improving and building on it.
