Beyond physical needs. Some aspects of the spiritual dimension of Roma inclusion Based on interviews with Roma in the Reformed Church Hungary By Naszádi Krisztina

Estimated ratio of Roma school children in Hungary.

5 key elements as 'added values' finding positive identity a tool of empowerment social mobility through experiencing a 'calling' embracing a Christian (protestant) ethics contribution to community building

Solving identity problems -'I hated the Roma as a teenager, because I blamed them for my sufferings.' -'I found my Roma identity in the gang, so I thought, to be a good Roma means to be a good criminal.' -'I am a Christian - this is my main identity and now I can accept that it is God, who created me Roma, and he had a plan with it.' -' I am God's child'

A tool of enpowerment 'It is a great power to know that my Father is a mighty Lord. God could make a brilliant artist- group of us who should have stayed on the perifery of society. Our humility did not allow us to think like that, but I beleive that's God view of us. This is boldness.' 'You always hear that you cannot study, cannot find a job, all you try is in vain. But you have to fight this image you have about yourself due to your family or school or the media. You have to beleive that 'you can move mountains' and then you will be able to do it.'

Social mobility upwards through experiencing a 'calling' 'It is a great miracle for me, because as a child I was smart, but indifferent to learning. My foster parents put me into a vocational school. After my conversion I finished secondary school and enrolled to the college to become an RE teacher. I have to go back to my people.' 'If I had accomplished something in my life, God put the next stepping stone in front of me.'

'Called' to build a bridge between Roma and non Roma I beleive that I may become God's instrument that Roma and non Roma get to know each other and understand one another. 1Kor 9,20-22 last point: community building

Embracing a Christian (protestant) ethics 'There was nobody to instruct me what's good and what's wrong.' 'There are no dirty words in our yard' 'I had five wives, but since reformation has come into our village, I know what it means to be responsible.'

Spirituality contributes to community building 'It was good that finally I could belong to a community, they trusted me and counted on me.' 'I do beleive that I can become God's instrument to facilitate the mutual understanding of Roma and non- Roma.' 'I beleive that there is a great potential in us, Roma to serve the majority. If Roma and non Roma christians could form an attractive church community where you can experience the freedom to express your true self how it was created by God, then we could have a a worshipping community of a different quality.

These benefits are interrelated 'I did not receive wealth or a house or a car from God, but a family, a community and a calling' – Roma presbiter of a basically non- roma Reformed church.
