S.P.S. - HMS May 19, 2011

New 2011 ELA & Literacy and Math Curriculum Frameworks  comprised primarily of the Common Core State Standards  written explicitly to define the knowledge and skills that students must master to be college and career ready by the end of high school

Think of literacy as a spine; it holds everything together. The branches of learning connect to it, meaning that all core content teachers have a responsibility to teach literacy. Vicki Phillips and Carina Wong, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

ELA/Literacy Common Core Appendices Research on text complexity is in Appendix A. Exemplars are not intended to be required readings, they provide examples. They are intended to demonstrate a pre-K-12 progression in text complexity. They include nonfiction (key American documents, history, the arts, science, math, and technology) and digital texts, as well as poetry, drama, fiction, folk- and fairy-tales, mythology, and traditional literature. Sample performance tasks linked to the standards accompany some of the selections in Appendix B. Appendix C has examples of student writing that have been annotated to reflect the standards.

ELA Standards – cognitively complex skills ①Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. ②Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse formats and media, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. ③Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. ④Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. ⑤Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others. ⑥Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.

MCAS Transition Plan ELA & Literacy

Pre-K-12 Standards for Mathematical Practice “Expertise” for students at all grade levels: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

MCAS Transition Plan Math

Looking Ahead Preschools, districts and educator preparation programs should have curriculum and instruction fully aligned to the new frameworks by the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year 2014-2015 - Pending its successful development, Massachusetts will transition to PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) for ELA and Math. MCAS in grades 3-8 will be based exclusively on the new frameworks in spring 2014 Similar standards development process for science and engineering, with standards expected in mid-2012 and a transition period to follow Standards for English Language Learners, Comprehensive Health, History and Social Science, the Arts, and Foreign Languages will be added to the revision cycle

ESE Next Steps…. ESE is developing mini-units on specific aspects of the new standards: – Text Complexity – Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects for grades 6-12 – Pre-K Standards and the Guidelines for Preschool Learning Experiences – Pre-K-5 Curriculum: Informational Text – The Standards-Based Classroom – Using the Crosswalks to Align Curriculum – Writing for a Purpose: Argument, Explanation, and Narrative

Seekonk Public Schools Tentative Plans for Implementation Spring – Summer, 2011  District Curriculum Council develops implementation plan.  Overview of New Frameworks at staff meetings.  Begin to update/revise curriculum guides in ELA and Math (based on volunteer grade level groups). 2011-2012 School Year  More In-Depth Professional development on the 2011 Frameworks Content  Professional Development in Literacy and Math Instructional Strategies.  Continue/Begin updating/revising curriculum guides in ELA and Math.  Continue to prepare students for current MCAS tests. (On focused standards in Math) Spring – Summer, 2012  Materials and program review for ELA PreK-5 to be purchased in Summer, 2012.  Complete revision/updating of guides in ELA and Math.  Begin revision of common assessments, standards-based report cards.  Begin to update/revise guides in SS and Science (Gr. 6-12).
