WHAT WOULD YOU DO RULINGS AND MECHANICS “WWYD”

Situations While close to the net, Team X Libero reaches higher than the top of the net and attempts to block an attack by Team W. While checking lineups for the second set, the R2 notices that #9 is listed as Team B’s Libero and is also listed as one of the 6 starting players. Team S #10 legally serves the ball. During the rally a ball from another court interferes with play, and the R1 stops play and whistles for a replay. The coach from Team Z now asks for a substitution. After Team R’s third team hit, the ball enters the plane of the net where it is contacted simultaneously by a player from each team. The ball rolls along the net and contacts the antennae.

Situations The Libero is standing with both feet behind the attack line. The Libero jumps and while in the air above the front zone sets the ball using fingertip action. The Libero lands in the front zone. A teammate attacks the ball which is completely above the height of the net sending it to the opponents floor. Red #7 makes a team’s first contact. The ball is then simultaneously contacted by Red #2 and #8. Red #8 then contacts the ball sending it over the net. When can a blocker legally reach across the net and contact a ball on the opponents’ side? The R1 whistles to stop play, and signals an illegal back row attack on Team A. Team C’s coach then asks for a substitution #6 for #4. Immediately following the substitution the R1 realizes that the player from Team A was a front row player and changes the ruling.

Situations Blue #5 reaches higher than the net to block a served ball. The ball is blocked into the top of the net but remains on Blue’s side of the net. Blue #5 sets the ball to Blue #2 who sends the ball over the net on the floor of Team Red’s side of the net. Black Player #6 serves and scores 2 points. Black Player #6 then serves into the net. The Red team serves the ball and scores a point. The scorekeeper then informs the R2 that Black #6 had been an illegal server. Misinformation is given by the R2 in response to a coach’s request for a line up check. This immediately results in a wrong server.

How would you handle this ? The R1 blows his whistle and signals 4 hits. As the R2 you are certain there was a touch on the ball. Player #4 continually address the R1 regarding ball handling decisions. During a dead ball the head coach is near the court talking to his setter. The assistant coach stands near the bench coaching the team’s hitters. The R2 gives the R1 a discreet illegal contact signal on a very obvious illegally contacted ball. The R1 does not take your signal. The Red Libero hand sets the ball in the front zone and the next contact with the ball above the height of the net lands on the Blue Team’s court. The R1 awards a point to the Red Team.

Mechanics What would you signal ? Red #4 and Blue #3 are involved in a joust. The ball lands out of bounds on Blue’s side of the net. Player#8, the setter, for the Gold team reaches across the net and brings the ball back to the Gold team’s side. Red #6 legally crosses the centerline extended. However he brushes Black #7 who is passing the ball. A ball is attacked into the referee stand. A ball tossed for a serve contacts a backboard. As the ball is contacted for service, the server for Team X steps on, but not past, the hash mark defining the side boundary of the service zone.
