3  February 15 th, 1898  260 sailors killed  Newspapers blame the Spanish

4  Fleet of U.S. ships are sent to the Spanish controlled Phillipines  U.S. will attack the Phillipines if fighting with Spain breaks out in Cuba  While the Spanish want to avoid war, Americans want a fight  “Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain”  After America ignores Spain’s intention to stop fighting in Cuba, Spain declares war on America and Congress declares war on Spain
