1 Periodic Table Trends: Atomic Radius & Ionization Energy pg. 307-312
LO: I can describe and explain the trend of atomic radius & ionization energy.

2 Element Families (Groups)
1: Alkali Metals 2: Alkaline Earth Metals 3: Boron Group 4: Carbon Group 5: Nitrogen Family 6: Oxygen Family 7: Halogens 8: Noble Gases

3 Element Families (Groups)
Family number = # of valence electrons (v.e.) Helps determine chemical behavior Elements in same family behave similarly, chemically.

4 Homework Due: Inquiry into the PT

5 Atomic Radius Atomic radius decreases as you move left to right across a period. Atomic radius increases as you move down a family.

6 Atomic Radius

7 As you move left to right across a period...
Atomic Radius Why the trend? As you move left to right across a period... Nuclear Charge: Valence Shell: Result:

8 As you move top to bottom down a family...
Atomic Radius Why the trend? As you move top to bottom down a family... Nuclear Charge: Valence Shell: Result:

9 Atomic Radius of Ions Positive Ion Radius Na+ vs. Na
Negative Ion Radius Cl- vs. Cl

10 The Noble Gases Noble Gases: Group 8
Inert (non-reactive), stable elements due to full valence electron shells. All elements want to “be like” the noble gases (stable).

11 Ionization Energy Ionization Energy: The energy needed to remove an electron from an atom. Leads to the formation of an ion (charged particle).

12 Ionization Energy Trend (I.E.)
I.E. increases as you move left to right across a period. I.E. decreases as you move down a family.

13 Ionization Energy As you move left to right across a period Nuclear Charge: Valence shell: Result: i.e. increases As you move top to bottom down a family Nuclear Charge: Result: i.e. decreases

14 Homework 1) Read pg & complete questions on pg , #73, 74, only in your ISN. Due Tuesday, 12/8
