Do Now: 1. In your own words, define immigration. 2. Now, write the word immigration in the middle of your paper. Then, create a word web around immigration where you write all of the words that you associate with immigration. Option B: You may also draw the words that come to mind when you think about immigration.

2 IMMIGRATION! “Turn to page 88 and let’s read “Why People Immigrate” in small groups. While you are in small groups, you are to: define the word immigrant and copy it in your notes. If you want to work ahead of the class, you may re-read and copy down reasons why people immigrate.

3 Key Point #1: An immigrant is a person who moves from one country to another. Immigration is the act of moving from one country to another.

4 “What factors contribute to a person’s decision to immigrate?”

5 KEYPOINT #2: A push factor is a reason why immigrants are pushed away from their original country.  something is pushing them away, making them want to leave.

6 KEYPOINT #3 : A pull factor is any reason that pulls someone to another country.
