2 Community Participation in 2008 Researchers and educators from all states except Delaware, Rhode Island, and Vermont have participated in TeraGrid’s EOT efforts during 2008 as participants, instructors, presenters, and campus representatives. There are users with allocations in Delaware, Rhode Island, and Vermont, thus TeraGrid worked with people in all 50 states. In total 10,792 participants, of which at least 924 self identified as under-represented, participated in 239 events including workshops, tutorials, seminars, presentations, campus visits, courses, symposium and tours. TeraGrid is preparing a computationally literate national workforce

3 Campus Champions program engaged 30 campuses, including 5 Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), and 10 institutions from EPSCoR states. Cyprus

5 Education Highlights Integrating research and education through professional development and curriculum development –Provided K-12 and undergraduate faculty workshops to introduce them to computational thinking and HPC technologies for enhancing STEM education –Assisted educators with integrating computational thinking, quantitative methods and multi-scale reasoning into STEM courses –College courses developed and offered for undergraduate and graduate audiences Broadening Participation –Proactively recruiting and supporting under-represented people –Conducted workshops and tutorials at MSI and EPSCoR institutions Learning materials posted to CSERD and HPC University Digital Library for broad dissemination Educators are incorporating computational thinking into STEM classrooms across the country

6 Outreach Highlights Campus Champions –The Science Advisory Board encouraged (and continues to encourage) TeraGrid to be aggressive in growing the number of campus partnerships –Began with U Kentucky (EPSCoR institution) and grew to 30 institutions in less than a year (today there are 33 institutions) and we’re in discussion with another 30 campuses TeraGrid Pathways –Awareness sessions conducted at more than 12 professional society meetings –Made over 130 contacts with potential new TeraGrid users with an emphasis on under- represented communities (by race, gender, disabilities, institution, or field of science) –New user support now being provided to 12 new users –7 people have been assigned mentors –4 fellowship awards have been made to support getting codes running on TG –Science Gateways: ECSU on PolarGrid, and Navajo Technical College on GEON TeraGrid’08 Conference: 350 participants; full day tutorials, papers, student competitions “The help of the TeraGrid champions has been invaluable both in writing and submitting the application of allocation and later, in resolving specific issues with software installation, correspondence with the TeraGrid IT support and a close follow up on my progress”, Dr. Nurit Haspel, Rice University

7 Training Highlights Multi-modal delivery for different learning needs, styles and timelines –Expanded synchronous content delivery offered –On-line tutorials are reaching larger audiences with more topics –Over 30 new training topics delivered HPC University in production –HPC University portal released at SC08 –Catalog of training and education resources from NSF, DOE, etc. –Calendar of HPC events –Opportunities for educators and students to get involved in HPC All sessions are announced via web site, TG User Portal, HPC University, through conferences and workshops, news postings, and through e-mail HPC University is working to fill critical gaps in HPC workforce preparation for students and professionals in all fields

9 Broadening the TeraGrid User Base Creation of DACs/Start-up and Education accounts – 2007: 736 requests, 684 approved – 2008: 762 requests, 703 approved, 17 education accounts approved New users – 2007 - 1,714 new users – 2008 - 1,862 new users TeraGrid allocations among 12 MSIs and 34 EPSCoR institutions TeraGrid worked with people in all 50 states in CY2008

10 Evaluation Activities Working with external evaluator to assess EOT impact across TeraGrid using the Trilogy model based on work of Jolly, Campbell, & Perlman, 2004 Pre-, Post- and 6-month follow-up surveys have been developed for use within EOT events Surveys are being piloted through April 2009 and will be live for summer events. Data will be analyzed on a monthly basis for the first 6 months to detect any unanticipated trends in responses. Quarterly reports will be made during the first 6 months to reflect on process and impact. Process will be refined as needed, then reports will be made on a bi-annual basis. TeraGrid conducts on-going surveys, interviews, and discussions with the community to address their needs and requirements for integrating research and education.

11 EOT Plans for PY5 Education –Conduct over 100 professional and curriculum development workshops –Disseminate materials through CSERD (digital library) Outreach –Host TeraGrid’09, June 22-25, 2009, in Arlington,VA Anticipate funding to support 75 high school, undergrad, grad students –At least double the number of Campus Champions –Conduct outreach to > 20 Professional Society Meetings Training –Conduct > 50 training sessions, 10 will include new content –Offer > 30 sessions synchronously; 8 with new topics –Create >10 new asynchronous tutorials Community needs assessment –HPC training and education survey being conducted this month Building a larger and more diverse community of practice

12 Student Engagement –NEW: Computational science problem of the week launched on HPC Univ to engage students –Engage > 300 K-12 and > 500 college students EOT highlights –NEW: EOT monthly newsletter launched in March –2nd EOT Highlights to be produced for SC09 Evaluation –NEW: Conduct first 6-month analysis by December PY5 Plans (cont.) 21 Evaluation Framework Uses Trilogy Model* Evaluation questions address increases in knowledge, expertise, and self-efficacy, and how these change over time (longitudinal). Each survey item addresses at least one component of this model. Evaluation outcomes provide data on how effective EOT activities, as a whole, have been in accomplishing these goals. * Trilogy model based on work of Jolly, Campbell, & Perlman, 2004
