Fractions With Like Denominators

Terminology Like decimals, fractions represent parts of numbers. A fraction is usually a number that is between 0 and 1. Numerator - number on top Denominator - number on bottom

How about some warm-ups? Write each fraction in simplest form: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

To add or subtract fractions with like denominators: If the denominators are already the same, then you’re ready to add or subtract. Add or subtract the numerators. Keep the denominators the same. Simplify (reduce) the fraction, if possible. If you end up with an improper fraction, change it to a mixed number.

Examples 1 5 + 2 5 = 3 5 This answer cannot be reduced any further.

9 14 5 = 4 The GCF of 4 and 14 is 2, so we divide by 2 to reduce. ÷ 2 = 2 7

8 9 + 3 9 = 11 9 This is an improper fraction (the top is bigger than the bottom), so we want to change it to a mixed number. To do this, divide the bottom into the top. 911 1 9 2 Answer: 1 2 9

Try Some 7 12 5 = 4 7 + 1 7 = 8 15 + 12 15 = 1 6 5 7 1 1 3

At a bake sale, of a cherry pie and of an apple pie are sold. What is the total amount of pie sold? At a bake sale, of a cherry pie and of an apple pie are sold. What is the total amount of pie sold? In this problem we are asked to find the sum of Our first step is to add the numerator. Second step is to keep the denominator the same. In this case the fraction is already simplified.

Your Turn Marie set out to bake a lemon meringue pie. The depth of a pie pan that she used is cm deep. After baking, the crust rises another cm above the pan. How deep is Marie’s pie?

Sometimes, the sum of fractions is greater than 1. In this case we must rename the improper fraction, as a mixed number. Sometimes, the sum of fractions is greater than 1. In this case we must rename the improper fraction, as a mixed number. After the thanksgiving day dinner, of a pecan pie and of a pumpkin pie were left. What fractions of the pies remain?  Combine numerators over denominators.  Add the numerators. Denominators remain the same. 1  Write as a mixed number. 1  Simplify.
