EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS Section 4.3

KEY TERMS Fraction –A number in the form of a which represents a b part of a whole Numerator –The top number of a fraction, and it represents the part of the whole (how much you have) Denominator –The bottom number of a fraction, and it represents the total number in the group. Equivalent Fraction –Two or more fractions that represent the same part. (equal fractions) Simplest Form –When a numerator and denominator have a GCF of 1

Equivalent Fractions Name the same amount but have different numerators and denominators. 1 2 = 2 4 1 2 1 4 1 4

Equivalent Fractions Are sometimes called equal fractions: two or more fractions that name the same number. 1 2 = 2 4 1 2 4 4 1 1

Equivalent Fraction Models 1 2 2 4 3 6 ==

1 2 4 8 5 10 = =

Equivalent Fraction Models 3 4 6 8 =

2 3 4 6 =

What are the missing numbers? 1 2 2 4 3 6 ==

3 4 6 8 =

To Find Equivalent Fractions Multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number. 1 3 3 3 3 9 x =

To Find Fractions in Simplest form Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number. 4 12 4 4 1 3 ÷ =
