Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Solution A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components. The dissolving agent is the solvent. The substance which is dissolved is the solute. Examples Lemonade Soda water

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Solid in Liquid Solution Solution of Sugar in Water Solution of Iodine in Alcohol (Tincture of Iodine)

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Solid in Solid Solution Gas in Liquid Solution Gas in Gas Solution Alloy Aerated drinks Air

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Properties of a Solution Solution is a homogeneous mixture. The particles of a solution are so small that they cannot be seen by naked eyes. They do not scatter a beam of light passing through the solution. So, the path of light is not visible in a solution. The solute particles cannot be separated from the mixture by the process of filtration.

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Dilute and Concentrated Solutions

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Saturated and Unsaturated Solutions At any particular temperature, a solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving, is said to be a saturated solution. If the amount of solute contained in a solution is less than the saturation level, it is called an unsaturated solution. The amount of the solute present in the saturated solution at this temperature is called its solubility.

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Concentration of a Solution The concentration of a solution is the amount of solute present in a given amount (mass or volume) of solution or solvent.

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Ways of Expressing Concentration of Solution Concentration of a Solution

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Concentration of a Solution A solution contains 20 g of common salt in 250 g of water. Calculate the concentration in terms of mass by mass percentage of the solution. Problem Solution Mass of solute (salt) = 20 g Mass of solvent (water) = 250 g Mass of solution = 20 g + 250 g = 270 g Mass percentage of solution = Mass of solute/Mass of solution X 100 = 20/270 X 100 = 7.4 %

Is Matter Around Us Pure Solutions Concentration of a Solution Concentration of a Solution What is the concentration in percent mass/volume of 150 mL of solution containing 30 g of solute? Problem Solution Mass of solute = 30 g Volume of solution = 150 mL Mass/volume percentage of solution = Mass of solute/Volume of solution X 100 = 30/150 X 100 = 20 %
