Solutions Heterogeneous mixture – mixture that is not uniform throughout Homogeneous mixture – mixture that is uniform throughout suspension - > 1000 nm colloid2 – 1000 nm solution.2 – 2 nm
3
Types of Solutions
4
Characteristics of Solutions The Distribution of particles in a solution is uniform The components of a solution do not separate upon standing A solution cannot be separated into its components by filtration For any given solute and solvent, the concentrations can vary Solutions are usually transparent Solutions can be separated into pure components
5
Saturated Solution A solution containing the maximum amount of dissolved solute at equilibrium.
6
Supersaturated Solution contains a greater than equilibrium amount of solute
7
Solubility The amount of solute needed to form a saturated solution
8
Temperature Effects on Solids Temperature does effect solubility but it is unpredictable
9
Temperature Effects on Gases Decreases Increased temperature Decreases Solubility of gases
10
Pressure effects No effect on solids Great effect on gases – More Pressure More Gas Dissolves
