SEMINAR - La Spezia, October 13 th 2000 TERMINAL OPERATORS and GLOBALISATION Giorgio MUSSO Lerici, October 13 th 2000 FEPORT - Federation of European Private Port Operators TARROS’EXPERIENCE

1 DOOR TO DOOR CONTAINER CARRIER DEDICATED TO TRAFFIC IN THE MED HOME PORT: LA SPEZIA TRAFFIC 2000 : more than 100.000 TEUS TARROS

2 CARE about CUSTOMER’S NEED EXPAND the VALUE CHAIN in the TRANSPORTATION CYCLE UNDERSTAND the CRUCIAL ITEMS in the DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM In the GLOBALISATION ERA what should a LOCAL OPERATOR do to SURVIVE

The TRANSPORTATION CHAIN ? VESSELS ? It’s EASIER TO BUILD a 100.000 tons capacity VESSEL than an APARTMENTS BUILDING The ship market is so plentiful and cheap that the vessels do not seem to be in the near future a crucial item RECEIVER SHIPPER WHERE ARE THE CRUCIAL ITEMS IN OUR BUSINESS ? ? CONTAINERS ? Same as above ? ORGANIZATION & LOGISTIC ? ? ORGANIZATION & LOGISTIC ? It is just a matter of GOOD MANAGEMENT: it is NOT an EXTERNAL FACTOR 3

4 ? PORTS ? There is no general rule In some places in the world (Far East - Northern Europe - North America) ports are INCREASING every year in CAPACITY & EFFICIENCY : NO LIMIT to grow is foreseen in the near future Other places just allow a LIMITED GROWTH : NOT ENOUGH to keep up to the pace of TRAFFIC GROWTH

5 some comments on Italy and north Tyrrenian ports In the Mediterranean sea trade OUR COUNTRY alone participates to about 50% of the total SHARE The Italian SEATRADE in CONTAINER is more than DOUBLED in the last 10 YEARS (transhipment excluded) 85% of Italian trade ORIGINATES (from/to) in NORTHERN ITALY (including Toscana and Marche) TWO PORT AREAS are dedicated to this trade: NORTH ADRIATIC PORTS (from Trieste to Ancona) NORTH TYRRENIAN PORTS (from Savona to Livorno)

6 TRAFFIC from January till July 2000: NORTH ADRIATIC PORTS : 280.000 teus NORTH TYRRENIAN PORTS : 1.720.000 teus 14% 86%

7 Are NORTH TYRRENIAN PORTS able to INCREASE CAPACITY AND EFFICIENCY in the NEAR FUTURE ? NO NEW PORT is FORESEEN in the Piano Generale dei Trasporti e della Logistica (July 2000) What about EXISTING PORTS ?

8 SAVONA slight possibilities of growth of the container traffic GENOVA limited possibilities of growth, both in the old port and in Voltri (due to geographical and morphological limitations to terminals and quays; besides a bottleneck situation in road and rail access to inland) LIVORNO port growth limited by structural (shallow waters and limited piers) and commercial problems (distance from industrial areas) LA SPEZIA port growth limited by environmental problems (the last PRP refused by the city, struggling now to reach a compromise with strong restrictions to the port expansion)

9 …. and concluding HOME PORT IN OUR TRADE IS CRUCIAL …. and concluding HOME PORT IN OUR TRADE IS CRUCIAL We, as MEDITERRANEAN OPERATORS mainly oriented on the Italian market, are convinced that a DEDICATED TERMINAL in the NORTH TYRRENIAN SEA is ESSENTIAL to SURVIVE. WAYS OF ACCESS TO THE MAIN INDUSTRIAL AREA of our country will be BOTTLENECKED in the near future by NORTH TYRRENIAN PORT LACK OF CAPACITY
