IMPORTANT QUOTES  TOM: It became an obsession. Like some archetype of the universal unconscious, the image of the gentleman caller haunted our small apartment… P. 19

IMPORTANT QUOTES  ( Before the lights come up again, the violent voices of Tom and Amanda are heard. They are quarreling behind the portieres. In front of them stands Laura with clenched hands and panicky expression. A clear pool of light is on her figure throughout this scene. ) P. 20

IMPORTANT QUOTES  TOM: House, house! Who pays rent on it, who makes a slave of himself to – P. 21

IMPORTANT QUOTES  ( He tears the portieres open. The dining- room area is lit with a turgid smoky red glow … Their gesticulating shadows are cast on the ceiling by the fiery glow. ) P. 22

IMPORTANT QUOTES  ( …Now we see Amanda; her hair is in metal curlers and she is wearing a very old bathrobe, much too large for her slight figure, a relic of the faithless Mr. Wingfield… ) P. 22

IMPORTANT QUOTES  AMANDA: What right have you got to jeopardize your job? Jeopardize the security of us all? How do you think we’d manage if you were- P. 23

IMPORTANT QUOTES  TOM: … I say to myself, “How lucky dead people are!”… P. 23

IMPORTANT QUOTES  ( With an outraged groan he tears the coat off again, splitting the shoulder of it, and hurls it across the room. It strikes against the shelf of Laura’s glass collection, and there is a tinkle of shattering glass. Laura cries out as if wounded. ) ( Music ) ( Screen legend : “The Glass Menagerie.”) LAURA (shrilly): My glass! – menagerie… ( She covers her face and turns away. ) P. 24

Short Individual Response on Symbols of Escape  Using your notebooks, write down potential symbols of escape from the play:  This can be done in bullet point form or in full sentences  Do not forget to support your ideas with evidence from the play  Include page numbers

GROUP ACTIVITY  In groups of 3 or 4, discuss your ideas from the short response.  Using the “Symbols of Escape” handout on Haiku, identify different symbols of escape found within the play  Once you have identified these symbols, think about the character(s) that is (are) associated with each symbol.

CLASS DISCUSSION AND QUESTION PERIOD

FREE-WRITE  Guiding Questions:  How do you escape your reality?  What would your symbol of escape be?  What do you do?  Where do you go?  Who are you with?  Would you consider your method healthy?
