2. Minister of Justice 1967-1968 Made changes to the criminal code Many laws were outdated –divorce and abortion were difficult –homosexuality was illegal He worked to decriminalize all of these things He said : “The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.”

Trudeaumania The Youth wanted a new face in politics: atmosphere of chance and rebellion 1968: Pierre Elliott Trudeau becomes PM –A French-speaking Quebecker: would he be able to address Québec’s concerns? –Youthful, casual, stylish –Drove fast sports cars, rode camels, appeared in tabloid magazines –Cool under pressure, logical, scholarly –Witty, confident: appeared on TV –CHARISMATIC! Whenever he appeared to give a speech, it was like a rock concert!

4. JUST SOCIETY Trudeau firmly believed that Canada had a long way to go in becoming a just society. He believed that a just society included at least 2 things: freedom and equality The concept also included: –all people having the means and motivation to participate –personal and political freedoms being secure –minority rights being secure from the whims of the majority “Canada will be a strong country when Canadians of all provinces feel at home in all parts of the country, and when they feel that all of Canada belongs to them.”
