2 What is Identity theft? Occurs when someone, without your knowledge, acquires a piece of you personal information and uses it to commit fraud.

3 How many were affected by Identity Theft???? A total of 3.7 percent

4 Who is the Federal Trade Commission???? They are responsible for investigating and prosecuting unfair competition including illegal boycotts, price-fixing and other types of collusion.

5 Deter “While nothing can guarantee that you won’t become a victim of identity theft, you can minimize your risk, and minimize the damage if a problem develops, by making it more difficult for identity thieves to access your personal information.”

6 Detect “The best way to detect identity theft is to monitor your accounts and bank statements each month, and check your credit report on a regular basis.”

7 Defend “Take steps to respond to and recover form identity theft as soon as you suspect it.”  Place a fraud alert on your credit reports, review you credit reports.  Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently  File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission  File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.

8 What are the signs??? Accounts you didn’t open and debts on your accounts that you can’t explain. fraudulent or inaccurate information on your credit reports, including accounts and personal information, like your Social Security number, addresses), name or initials, and employers. failing to receive bills or other mail. Follow up with creditors if your bills don't arrive on time. A missing bill could mean an identity thief has taken over your account and changed your billing address to cover his tracks. receiving credit cards that you didn't apply for. being denied credit, or being offered less favorable credit terms, like a high interest rate, for no apparent reason. getting calls or letters from debt collectors or businesses about merchandise or services you didn't buy.
