What is Educational Technology? Educational Technology is the use of technology to support the learning process. It is also known variously as e-learning, instructional technology and learning technology. Technology refers to all “the ways people use their inventions and discoveries to satisfy their needs and desires”.

Where did the Educational Technology Started?

Ancient Greece Educational Technology In ancient Greece, the Elder Sophist used the term “techne” to refer the process of applying knowledge systematically to the practical art of instruction. They formulated cognitive rules, systematically analyzed subject matter designed instructional technologies and devised effective instructional materials. 6 Middle Age Educational Technology During the Middle Age Advent of Scholastic Philosophy, Pierre Abelard introduced a technology of instruction which was really a new method of structuring and presenting materials that helped set the style of scholastic education.

Back as early as during the ancient civilization when man used pointed sticks to inscript signs and symbols on the leaves and on bark of trees and the time when tribal priests systemized bodies of knowledge, and early cultures invented pictographs or sign writing to record and transmit information.

But the usual history of Educational Technology is made to start with educational film (1900’s) or Sidney presseys’s mechanical teaching machines in the 1920’s.

By 1920, visual media became widely accepted. Then came the publication of audio- visual media texts. In 1926, educational films were used as instructional media. In 1927, Pressey wrote on programmed learning through a machine which tested and confirm a learning task. Educational Technology. By 1920, visual media became widely accepted. 10 In 1932, the first instructional television program was aired at the State University of Iowa. About the same time, the 16 mm sound motion picture was developed and this served as the educational workhorse during the audio- visual movement of the time. Educational Technology. 11 During World War II, the U.S. government encouraged the implementation of technology of instruction for military training programs. This gave impetus to a system approach to instruction to include: micro-teaching, individualized instruction, Language laboratories, behavioral laboratories, behavioral objectives, computer assisted instruction and among others Educational Technology

Skinner’s work led to “programmed instruction” focusing on the formulation of behavioral objectives, breaking instructional content into small units and rewarding correct responses early and often. 14 In a more simplified form they corresponds to today’s “e-contents” that often form the core of “e- learning” set-ups, sometimes also referred to as web-based training (WBT) or e-instruction.

Frequently based on constructivist and cognitivist learning theories, these technologies were micro- worlds (computer environments where learners coild explore and build), simulations (computer environments where learner can play with parameters of dynamic system) and hypertext. 17 Digitized communicating and networking in educated started in the mid-90’s in particular through the World-Wide Web (WWW), eMail and forums. There is difference between two major forms of online learning.

The 2000’s emergence of multiple mobile and ubiquitous technologies gave a new impulse to situated learning theories favoring learning-in-context scenarios.
