Faculty Disclosure We have not had any relevant financial relationships during the past 12 months.

Your Crucible Your team has the opportunity to design a three hour educational event for 2 nd year medical students to influence “the physician of the future” (help develop necessary skills, attitudes and practices for a patient centered delivery model) – How will you engage the patient voice? The family? The community? – Pick your method; be innovative; be creative; – develop your curriculum – Discussion

The Alchemy of Collaboration a power/process that changes/transforms something in a mysterious or impressive way What did you create : the outcome? What did you bring/ add to the mixture? What did you learn/take away from the experience? What are the opportunities/challenges ?

Ingredients in our crucible Community themes from focus groups http://news.medicine.dal.ca/Community _conversations_Summary.doc http://news.medicine.dal.ca/Community _conversations_Summary.doc Medical Students input/feeback Lynette Reid ;unit head, bioethicist Ajantha Jayabarathan; Family physician Joe Sadek ; Psychiatrist Linda Bayers; community educator

Outcome: The New Curriculum 200 hours of curriculum time September- May Immersive learning within community-based organisations, eg: self help connections, AA, Alzheimer’s society, Clubhouse for disabled adults Weekly one-hour lectures, panels, or film followed by a case-based 2 hour tutorial led by inter-professional co-tutors to model inter- professional collaboration, develop student engagement, reflective and critical thinking skills Selective project to follow own interests COLLABORATION within the COMMUNITY TO BRING “MED SCHOOL INTO THE COMMUNITY AND COMMUNITY INTO THE MED SCHOOL”

Outcome:”Changing the status quo” Collaborating with patients and families – What’s your perception ?

Outcome: Student reflection I visited Alcoholics Anonymous on my community engagement experience. What struck me most was how appreciative the members were to have someone from the health care field come visit them. The members were more comfortable in this environment compared to a doctor’s office; as we know a power differential exists between health care workers and patients, whether we like it or not. The experience allowed me greater insight into addictions and mental health, more so than I would have achieved if I had talked to the same individuals in a clinic.

Outcome: Participant Impact Statements Video clips – Fiona Bergin – Marilyn Peers – Melissa Myers – Joe Sadek In person – AJ

Objectives Describe an innovative, working model that introduces the citizen’s experience as a patient into health education and the complex web of collaborative mental health education Present outcomes of this intervention : personal, student, teachers, community based organisation and academic institution Guide the audience to customize this model to fit their own communities of practice Discuss the opportunities and challenges encountered

Session Evaluation Please complete and return the evaluation form to the classroom monitor before leaving this session. Thank you!
