Interdependence and Adaptation

In this topic we will learn more about how…..

Plants need light, warmth, air and water to grow well. Animals need food to grow and be healthy. Different animals and plants are found in different habitats. Animals and plants are suited to their environment.

Different plants and animals are found in different habitats and they have had to adapt (change) in order to survive in their habitat. Some plants and animals live in very cold places whereas others live in very hot, humid places.

YOUR TASK!! Compile a ‘mindmap’ containing as many different habitats as you can think of. For each habitat, name a plant or animal that you would find in that habitat.

habitats The Arctic (Polar Bear)

Amazing Adaptations!!

Polar Bear n Has white fur for camouflage. n Each hair is hollow for extra insulation. n Has sharp teeth and claws to catch and eat prey. n Has ridged foot pads to prevent slipping.

Camel n Has long legs to keep body away from hot sand n Can store fat in hump. n Can go for long periods without water.

Camel n Can close nostrils to keep out sand. n Has long eyelashes to keep out sand. n Many blood vessels just under the skin to cool the blood.

Penguin n Has thick layer of fat to keep warm. n Produces oil to keep feathers waterproof. n Stream lined body for swimming.

Golden Eagle n Large wing span for gliding. n Sharp talons for catching and holding prey. n Hooked beak for tearing meat. n Large eyes for spotting prey from great distances.

Shark n Stream-lined body for swimming. n Fins to propel through the water. n Sharp teeth. n Gills to breath under water.

Ostrich n Long legs to run fast. n Large eyes to see long distances. n Long feathers to provide more shade to eggs and to keep body warm at night.

cactus n Long roots to find water deep in the ground. n Fleshy stems to store water in the hot desert climate. n Thin needle leaves that don’t lose water.

TASK Conduct research into an animal of your choice and how it is adapted to its environment. You may use a variety of information sources, including the Internet.
