7 When can I teach? Normally from Year 2 of your PhD Programme. First year students are allowed to teach, on the basis of the criteria set out in the School policy approved in April 2012: –They have previous experience - which helps address the issue of lack of time for training to be undertaken - especially if there is a teaching need in semester 1; and –There is a shortage of other suitable teachers, i.e. a specific case needs to be made that there is no one else suitable; and –An agreed maximum number of hours is set to avoid overload; and –There is a clear understanding that students should not miss their research training classes, nor do they have grounds to request extensions to coursework submission, end of year reviews, etc; and –They have their supervisor support

8 To teach in MBS you must have: Completed the Faculty of Humanities online training programme Completed the online training log book that accompanies the online training (see section 8.8 of the handbook) Participated in the Faculty of Humanities Webinar about being a TA Attended the Faculty workshop for TAs Attended the MBS training for TAs In addition to apply for AHEA status you also need to have: Reflected on the MBS training by completing the relevant log book (see section 8.4 of the handbook) Undertaken and reflected on seven hours of teaching (see 8.3) Had an observation of teaching by a course co- ordinator (see 8.5) Written a 1500 word reflective essay
