4 Functions of Skin 1. Maintaining homeostasis/protection (mechanical, chemical, thermal, UV, bacteria) 2. Regulate body temperature 3. Retards water loss (keratin) 4. Houses sensory receptors 5. Synthesizes various chemicals (vitamin D) 6. Excretes waste

5 Sebaceous glands Oil glands all over the skin Produce sebum which is a lubricant that keeps skin/hair soft and moist, also kills bacteria

6 Eccrine Glands Apocrine Glands Small and numerous all over the body Produce sweat Regulate body heat Large and confined mainly to axillary and genital areas Produce fatty acid & protein secretion that when bacteria use as food causes us to have body odor Sudoriferous glands (sweat glands)

8 Athlete’s Foot Causes: mold-like fungi called dermatophytes that thrive in damp environments. It is contagious!!! Symptoms: Itching, stinging, burning, blisters, dryness, cracking & peeling skin Types: Ringworm, jock itch, nail fungus Treatments: Ointments, powders, sprays, creams, pills

10 Boil/ Carbuncle Causes: Bacteria or ingrown hairs Symptoms:  A painful, red bump that starts out about the size of a pea  Red, swollen skin around the bump  An increase in the size of the bump over a few days as it fills with pus (can sometimes reach the size of a golf ball)  Development of a yellow-white tip that eventually ruptures and allows the pus to drain out.  Fever  Chills Treatments:  Incision and drainage.  Antibiotics.

12 Herpes/Cold sores Cause : virus Symptoms: cluster of small fluid-filled blisters that break, forming painful sores that crust and heal, itching, tingling, or burning sensation, painful urination Types: HSV-1 & HSV-2, either can be mild or severe Treatments: ointments, Antiviral drugs (valtrex)

14 Contact dermatitis Causes: exposure to chemicals that provoke allergic responses. Symptoms: Itching, redness, swelling, progressing to blistering Treatments: Various creams, ointments, pills

16 Impetigo Cause: bacterial skin infection, very contagious Symptoms: red sores that can break open, ooze fluid, and develop a yellow- brown crust Types: mild- severe Treatment: ointment, creams, antibiotics

18 Psoriasis Cause: Unknown, possibly genetic or bad immune system Symptoms: Bright red areas of raised patches (plaques) on the skin, often covered with loose, silvery scales. Plaques can occur anywhere, but commonly they occur on the knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet, or lower back. Tiny areas of bleeding when skin scales are picked or scraped off,Mild scaling to thick, crusted plaques on the scalp. Itching, Nail disorders Types: 6 types ranging from mild-severe Treatment: creams, ointments, pills

23 Eczema Cause: is unknown, thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body's immune system to unknown triggers, usually in family history Symptoms: almost always itchy, areas usually appear very dry, thickened, or scaly. Commonly occurs on the face, knees, hands, or feet Types: mild to severe Treatments: lotions and creams

25 Keratosis pilaris Cause: from the buildup of keratin — a hard protein that protects your skin from harmful substances and infection. Keratin forms a scaly plug that blocks the opening of the hair follicle. Usually many plugs form, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin. Symptoms: Small, acne-like bumps, Painless, skin- colored bumps that can, at times, be red and inflamed, Dry, rough patches Treatment: medicated creams & ointments

27 Pediculosis Cause: parasites Symptoms: a tickling feeling of something moving in the hair; itching (caused by the an allergic reaction to the bites); sores on the head (caused by scratching);itching Treatment: Over-the-counter medication, prescription medication, wash EVERYTHING!!!
