3 Warm-Up Assign numbers to letters of the alphabet, letting A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, and so on. 1.Find the product and the sum of the values of the letters of your FULL first name. 2.Which is greater, the sum or the product?

4 Section 3 How are volume, area & surface area models for multiplication related to cubes and rectangles?

5 Area Model for Multiplication… Formula: A = l w Note the units in an area answer: ft 2, m 2, cm 2

6 Volume Model for Multiplication… Formula: V = l w h Note the units in a volume answer: ft 3, m 3, cm 3

7 Let’s try some… 6 in 12 in ALWAYS start with the formula you are using!!!! A = l w A = 6 12 A = 72 in 2 Then substitute what you know…

8 Let’s try another… 2y y Again, ALWAYS start with the formula you are using!!!! A = l w A = 2y y A = 2 (y y) A = 2 y 2 OR A = 2y 2 Then substitute what you know…

9 Let’s try a volume… 7cm 5 cm Again, ALWAYS start with the formula you are using!!!! V = l w h V = 7 5 12 V = 7 (5 12) V = 7 60 V = 420 cm 3 Then substitute what you know… 12 cm

10 Surface area of a rectangular prism… 7cm 5 cm Again, ALWAYS start with the formula you are using!!!! SA = 2 l w + 2 w h + 2 l h SA = 2 5 7 + 2 7 12 + 2 5 12 SA = 70 + 168 + 120 SA = 358 cm 2 Then substitute what you know… 12 cm SA = 2 l w + 2 w h + 2 l h SA = area top + area front + area side Note the units in a surface area answer: ft 2, m 2, cm 2

11 Another Volume… Sam’s Soup Kitchen packs cans in Cartons 40 cm long, 48 cm wide, and 20 cm tall. What is the volume of the carton? V = l w h V = 40 48 20 V = (40 20) 48 V = 800 48 V = 38,400 cm 3

12 7 in 6 in 20 in 4 in Weird…Find the area… Since we only have a rectangle area formula, we will need to make rectangles out of this shape, calculate their areas, and add them together. Blue rectangle… A = l w A = 6 7 A = 42 in 2 Red rectangle… A = l w A = 4 14 A = 56 in 2 Add ‘em up… Total Area = Blue + Red Area = 42 in 2 + 56 in 2 Area = 98 in 2
