3 Surface Area & Volume of Prisms To determine the surface area of prisms find the area of each side To determine the volume of prisms use the formula Volume of a Prism:V = B x h B = Area of base h = height

4 Surface Area & Volume of Prisms Example 1: Find the surface area of the following prism. Area of Top & Bottom A = 2(l x w) A = 2(3 x 4) A = 24 cm 2 Area of Sides A = 2(l x w) A = 2(4 x 12) A = 96 cm 2 Area of Front & Back A = 2(l x w) A = 2(3 x 12)  A = 72 cm 2

5 Surface Area & Volume of Prisms Area of Rectangular Prism  Add up the areas of all the sides A = 72 + 24 + 96 A = 192 cm 2

6 Surface Area & Volume of Prisms Example 2: Find the surface area of the following prism. Area of Front & Back A = 2(½bh) A = 2(½ x2x3) A = 2(3) A = 6 m 2

7 Surface Area & Volume of Prisms Area of Sides Side 1Side 2A = (l x w) A = (3 x 5)A = (4 x 5) A = 15 m 2 A = 20 m 2 Side 3 A = (l x w) A = (2 x 5) A = 10 m 2 Area of Triangular Prism A = 10 + 15 + 20 + 6 A = 51 m 2

8 Surface Area & Volume of Prisms Example 3: Find the volume of the following prism. V = B x h V = (4 x 6) x 5 V = (24) x 5 V = 120 cm 2 B = Area of base
