17. Debrief ◦ During the course of your brainstorm, which words did you come up with? ◦ What are the common themes? ◦ Large corporations, profit, trade, exploitation, income inequality ◦ You are thinking of GLOBALIZATION!

Additional questions to help us understand Globalization ◦ What did you have for dinner last night? ◦ Where did it come from? ◦ Where were your clothes/electronics/family car made? ◦ We have a lot of choices, do we enjoy that as consumers? ◦ Is it a good thing that we have so many choices? ◦ What is the cost?

Case Study: Shipbreakers ◦ We will be using Shipbreakers as a case study to understand globalization. ◦ Use the chart on p. 43 to record information. ◦ Critical analysis questions: ◦ How do North Americans see the people of Alang, India? ◦ Are they seen as having the same rights as us? ◦ How could Shipbreakers demonstrate that globalization is both good and bad?

20. Debrief What do you feel about the situation in Alang? Revisit critical analysis questions. In this case, is globalization good/bad or both? Make sure that you’ve filled in your chart.

21. Important terms activity ◦ Look at your “Globalization Practice Sheet” ◦ Underline common key words. ◦ Do you see a pattern in the definition? (You don’t need to memorize these definitions.)

Other Important Terms ◦ Integrate = come together ◦ Network = a group/system of interconnected people or things. ◦ Amalgamated = joined together ◦ Inter-linkages = to link together or join with one another ◦ Transcend = cross ◦ Capital = money ◦ How do these definitions relate back to the images?

23. Activity (5 mins) ◦ Globalization can be both helpful and hurtful. ◦ Together with your elbow partner, look at the examples on the bottom of p. 39. ◦ Decide if each example is a good or bad illustration of globalization. ◦ Also write how the example is related to globalization.

24. Can you think of a company that is an example of globalization? ◦ Companies that work in multiple countries (multinationals) control our food system. ◦ How is Monsanto involved in involved in globalization?

25. Debrief ◦ Do you think there’s a bias in this chapter of the text? ◦ Globalization is not necessarily good or bad. ◦ Its effects can be good or bad, or the way it’s done can have good or bad consequences. ◦ The problem is: the benefits of globalization aren’t necessarily distributed equally.
