Physics Science and Me Grade 5

What is Physics? Physics is that part of natural science which deals with the laws and properties of matter, and the forces acting upon it.

Systems A system is made up of parts that work together to perform a common function. case switch spring bulb reflector protective glass reflector batteries

Systems Some parts of the system are essential— they are necessary for the system to work. Other parts might be nonessential—the system will still function without them. Which part(s) could be removed and the flashlight would still work? Make a table in your science journal. List the essential parts and the nonessential parts of the flashlight. reflector switch batteries case bulb Protective glass Nonessential Parts Essential Parts

Force and Motion In order to find the speed that an object is moving, you must know the distance traveled and the time it took to go that distance. distance. time speed =

Force and Motion 1.A car traveled 450 miles in 5 hours. 2.A man ran 28 miles in 7 hours. 3.It took 30 minutes for a snail to go 60 cm. 4.A jet plane went 12 km in 6 seconds. 5.It took a bird 12 minutes to fly 48 m. Find the speed of each object in the instances below. Write your answers in your science journal. Be sure to label your answer (cm/sec, etc.).

Sound What is sound? Sound is made when an object vibrates. A sound can be high-pitched. The object vibrates faster. A sound can be low-pitched. The object vibrates slower. Pitch Volume An object with bigger vibrations makes a louder sound. An object with smaller vibrations makes a softer sound. Sound can only travel through materials: gas, liquid, or solid. If there is no material, no sound can travel!

Forms of Energy Light Sound Heat Electrical Solar

The Sun Almost all of the energy found on the Earth comes from the sun. The sun provides light and heat for the Earth.

Light When light hits a reflective surface such as a mirror, it changes directions. We call that reflection. When light passes through some substances, it slows downs and bends. This is called refraction.

Electricity In order to make a bulb light up, there must be a complete circuit.

Electricity Making the electric current stronger will make the bulb burn brighter.

Electrical Circuits In a series circuit, all of the bulbs are connected by one wire. That means that every time you increase the number of bulbs, each bulb gets dimmer. Also, if one bulb goes out, they will all stop burning.

Electrical Circuits In a parallel series all of the bulbs have a more direct connection to the power source. The voltage across every bulb is the same. All of the bulbs shine with the same brightness. If one bulb goes out, the others stay lit.

Electromagnet An electromagnet is a magnet formed from an electric current. The most common electromagnet consists of a wire coiled around a metallic core attached to a power source such as a battery. An electromagnet is a temporary magnet that can attract magnetic objects such as paper clips and other nails.
