4. + Fairy Tale Characteristics What makes a Fairy Tale a Fairy Tale? What are some Fairy Tale characteristics?

5. + Common Elements of Fairy Tales 1. A fairy tale begins with “Once upon a time…” 2. Fairy Tales happen in the long ago. 3. Fairy Tales have fantasy and make believe in them. 4. Fairy Tales have clearly defined Good characters vs. Evil characters. 5. Royalty is usually present in a fairy tale, a beautiful princess/handsome prince. 6. There may be magic with giants, elves, talking animals, witches or fairies. 7. Fairy Tales have a problem that needs to be solved. 8. It often takes three tries to solve the problem. 9. Fairy Tales have happy ending – “they all live happily ever after.” 10. Fairy Tales usually teach a lesson or have a theme.

6. + Eyes Past Print Shrek (51:20-53:20) Now I’ll show you a segment from Shrek, which satirizes fairy tales by departing from the typical fairy tale characteristics in humorous ways, but first you need the definition of SATIRE. A literary work that ridicules its subject through the use of techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and/or parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it. Pay attention to elements from the clip that depart from the typical characteristics of fairy tales.

7. + After the movie clip… Now that you’ve seen the movie clip, what are some details from the movie that depart from the typical fairy tale? Write them down on the same paper as your fairy tale elements list.

8. + Comparing Lists… What connections can you make between the two lists we’ve made?

9. + 4 Techniques of Satire EXAGGERATION To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. INCONGRUITY To present things that are out of place or are absurd in relation to its surroundings.

10. + 4 Techniques of Satire REVERSAL To present the opposite of the normal order (e.g., the order of events, hierarchical order). PARODY To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing.

11. + Types of Irony VERBAL When someone says something and means the opposite. SITUATIONAL When something happens that is the opposite of what is expected. DRAMATIC When the audience/reader knows something that the character does not.

12. + Techniques Used in Shrek I’m going to now show the movie clip once more. While you’re watching it again, identify at least one example from the movie clip for each of the 4 techniques of satire. You can discuss with your table if you need help.

13. + Techniques Used in Shrek EXAGGERATION Princess Fiona fights and successfully defeats Robin Hood and all of his Merry Men without any help and without any weapons. INCONGRUITY Princess Fiona uses her ponytail to deliver a knockout punch to one of the Merry Men. While frozen in mid-air martial arts kick, Princess Fiona pauses to fix her disheveled hair before knocking out two of the Merry Men.

14. + Techniques Used in Shrek REVERSAL The roles of the hero and the damsel have been reversed. In this clip, it is Princess Fiona, the rescuee, who fights and defeats the foe. PARODY The fight scene is an exaggerated imitation of the martial arts style and special effects used in movies such as The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

15. + How is this Satire? Identify the main comment or criticism about society that is being made by the satirical techniques in this movie clip from Shrek. (In other words, what are they making fun of?)

16. + How is this Satire? The traditional story of the knight rescuing the damsel-in-distress is not a realistic depiction of the roles filled by men and women in modern society. Current Hollywood action movies like The Matrix have become ridiculous because they are too focused on special effects.

17. + Homework Choose a fairy tale that you would like to satirize. Read the tale and be completely familiar with it before next class period. If possible, print out a copy of the story for reference for next class period’s work.
