6 What language do you speak? Germanic: includes German & English; spoken in more parts of the world than any other language

7 Germanic Language Group Has most native speakers Native speakers live mostly in northwest and central Europe About 20% of Europeans speak English or German as their native language Most Europeans learn English as a second language in their schools

8 What language do you speak? Romance: includes Spanish, French & Italian; based on Latin, the language of ancient Romans

9 Romance Language Group This group includes French, Italian, and Spanish These are found in the south and west of Europe These languages come from Latin, the language of the Roman Empire The Roman alphabet is used to write Romance and Germanic languages

10 What language do you speak? Slavic: includes Russian; began in the area between the Baltic and Black Sea.

11 Slavic Language Group This includes Russian They are found in central and eastern Europe They are written with a Cyrillic Alphabet

12 European Day of Languages September 26 Europe is rich in languages - there are over 200 European languages and many more spoken by citizens whose family origin is from other continents. The overall objectives are to raise awareness of: – Europe’s rich linguistic diversity – the need to diversify the range of languages people speak – the need for people to develop some degree of proficiency in two languages or more

13 LinguaBat Step 1: Give your LinguaBat a name (maybe something from another language that has meaning) Step 2: Decide what countries your LinguaBat is going to visit. Your Linguabat should travel to 5 European countries so that your bat can learn 5 different languages. Step 3: Decide your LinguaBat’s favorite words from the languages spoken there. You will need to chose 3 words or phrases for you bat to learn in each of the five languages. Step 4: Use the language translator link on my website to translate the three phrases into the 5 different languages. Make a collage of the words on or around your bat
