8 Hugh Hammond Bennet, The Father of Soil Conservation helped establish the Soil Erosion Service in 1933. The agency within the Department of Interior worked with farmers to demonstrate soil conservation methods in watershed-based demonstrations.

9 In the spring of 1935 during the height of the Dust Bowl, Bennett testified before a Congressional Committee and convinced Congress there is a need for soil conservation. The result was the Soil Conservation Act of April 27, 1935, which created the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) at USDA. In 1994 the SCS changed its name to NRCS to better reflect what we do.
