2 Cornell Notes: 2 D ivide the paper into three sections.Draw a dark horizontal line about 5 or 6 lines from the bottom. Use a heavy magic marker to draw the line so that it is clear.Draw a dark vertical line about 2 inches from the left side of the paper from the top to the horizontal line.

Don't use complete sentences. Use abbreviations, whenever possible. Develop a shorthand of your own, such as using "&" for the word "and".

5 5 Summarize. Write a summary of the main ideas in the bottom section.

6 Cornell Notes 6 Study your notes. Re-read your notes in the right column. Spend most of your time studying the ideas in the left column and the summary at the bottom. These are the most important ideas and will probably include most of the information that you will be tested on.

Examples Summary: There are nine parts of speech in the English language. Every word in a sentence has a job and can be identified as one of the nine parts of speech. Nouns identify people, places, things, and ideas, while pronouns replace nouns. Verbs are the action parts of the sentence and tell what the subject is doing. Adverbs describe nouns. Adverbs describe verbs and usually end in –ly. Conjunctions join words and clauses together. Articles are a type of adjective that come before nouns; there are only three articles: a, an, the. Prepositions show time location and movement. Interjections are words that show emotion.

11 11 Purpose of presentation: This presentation provides a very basic introduction to the concept of parts of speech in language. Actually, the study of parts of speech can be quite complicated and involved, but the purpose of this presentation is to give the students a working vocabulary and a way to improve their grasp of grammar.

15 15 Pronoun: takes the place of a noun Guillermo was studying for the mid-term exam when he realized that it was three o’clock in the morning. (There are actually many types of pronouns: personal, interrogative,demonstrative, indefinite, relative, possessive, reflexive, reciprocal)

16 16 Adjective: describes a noun The beautiful woman only wanted a couple of pairs of shoes. The rainy day made us even sadder.

17 17 Adverb: describes a verb The little girl walked happily through the park. The orphan hungrily ate the hot stew.

18 18 Conjunctions: words that join words, phrases or sentences Manuel and Marisol loved to cook. You will go to school, or you will fail. I am happy because I just received my check. It has been cloudy since the morning.

19 19 Article: There are only three articles--the, a, an (Actually, articles are adjectives and not a different part of speech) The bicycle was not only red but shiny. A yellow moon always appears in October. An excellent student, Armando passed all his exams.

20 20 Preposition: A word or phrase that shows the relationship between the noun that it takes as an object and some other word in the sentence. The cat was on the table. The dog was under the table. 21 21 Interjections: expressive words Wow, you knocked that ball out of the park. Oh, you really need to take care of yourself. Huh, what did you say? Ah, now I understand the problem.
