2 W HAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY ? “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” Information literacy can no longer be defined without considering technology literacy.

6 5 CRITERIAS FOR C RITICAL USE OF SOURCES Authority Accuracy Currency Coverage Objectivity

7 A UTHORITY What are the author’s qualifications for writing on the subject? How reputable is the publisher? Often difficult if the author’s name is listed, his or her qualifications are often absent. The publisher’s responsibility often not indicated.

8 A CCURACY Example: an author quoting statistics from another Internet source will often include a direct link to the other source. Even though Internet sources that point to other documents in this fashion may not have traditional bibliographies, they are nonetheless well documented. How reliable and free from error is the information? Problem: everyone may publish anything on the web …

9 C URRENCY The currency if an Internet document refers to the history of its publication and any revisions. A document with no dating at all is less reliable (on this particular score) than one that lists numerous revisions; in the second case, the author shows greater respect for readers ’ information needs. Is the content up-to-date?

10 C OVERAGE What topics are included and to what depth are the topics explored?

11 O BJECTIVITY To what extent is the information trying to sway the opinion of the audience? Goals/aims of persons or groups presenting material often not clearly stated.

12 R EFERENCING Avoid plagiarism Summarize in brief form in your own words, and cite the source Cite one time too many

15 H OW TO MANAGE YOUR REFERENCES ? Endnote Endnote is the industry standard software tool for publishing and managing bibliographies, citations and references on the Windows and Macintosh desktop. BibTex Is a reference management software for formatting lists of references. The BibTex tool is typically used together with the LaTex document preparation system.
