2. What is an embryo? According HFEA a human embryo is a “live human embryo where fertilisation is complete” Fertilisation is complete after the first cell division.

4. Learning Intentions: To understand where embryo’s used for scientific research come from. To be able to describe the process of IVF.

5. IVF When a couple cannot conceive naturally, they may be able to have a baby through In Vitro Fertilization, or IVF.

6. Babies born using this method are sometimes called ‘test tube babies’

7. IVF Eggs and sperm are collected and fertilised in the laboratory before the resulting embryo is transferred to the womb.

8. IVF The woman takes fertility drugs to stimulate the production of eggs. Once these are mature, they're collected by the doctor, using ultrasound to guide the collecting tube.

9. IVF The man produces a sperm sample, which is prepared before being put with the eggs in a Petri dish and left for a few days to see if fertilisation takes place.

10. IVF If a healthy embryo develops, this is placed in the womb using a catheter (a very fine needle or probe). Usually, no more than one or two are placed.

11. IVF Any remaining embryos suitable for freezing may be stored for future use. The sperm and/or eggs used may be the couple's own or donated.

12. How much control do people have over what happens to their embryos? 1.How long they want the embryos to be stored. (the standard period is ten years) 2.What should happen to the embryos if they were to die. 3.Whether the embryos are to be used for their own treatment only, or whether they can be donated for someone else’s treatment, or used for research. 4.Any other conditions they may have for the use of their embryos.
