2 Candidates in 1960 Read the handout and create two columns Candidate A and Candidate B Summarize the stance of each candidate on the following issues: Cold War, economy, taxes, labor, and medical care Cite the topics in which both candidates have similar ideas and explain Predict which political party each candidate belongs to: Republican and Democrat If you know identify the candidates

Nixon appeared on CBS television from Chicago for the first of four televised presidential debates – 1 st time in history Surveys showed that most of the 70 million TV viewers thought Kennedy won Most radio listeners gave the victory to Nixon

6 The Impact of Television Predict how the use of television will impact the Election of 1960 and future elections in the U.S. At election time, more than half of all voters reported that the Great Debates had influenced their opinion; 6% reported that their vote was the result of the debates alone. Nixon refused to a live debate in 1968 and 1972

7 Results Results: Kennedy—303 to Nixon—219 electoral votes (49.9% to 49.6%) At the age of 43, JFK was the youngest elected President
