1 The Progressives Out to save the world!

2 Bell Ringer  How would you define “progress?”  What are some examples of social progress we have made in the history of the US?  What would you identify as things the US still needs to make progress on?

3 The PROGRESSIVE ERA  This was a time period in American history where many groups of people stood up to issues of inequality and injustice through individual and group action.  This time period overlapped with the Gilded Age and Industrialization

5 A Look at the issues!  Companies during the Industrial Era needed to keep costs LOW and profits HIGH.  Large monopolistic companies and too much power in the trusts

6 Muck Raking  The Muckrakers were the investigative journalists of their day.  Exposing evil became a flourishing business.

7 Common Goals  Most reformers never completely agreed on the problems or solutions, progressives were most concerned with social problems of the era: Protecting social welfare Promoting moral improvement Creating economic reform Fostering efficiency

8 Bell Ringer  You will need your newest DBQ Packet.  Which of the following issues do you think is in most need of reform in today’s society and why: Birth Control Voting Rights Prostitution Food Safety

9 Progressive Era 4 Corners  Become a reformer!  Choose one of the four issues that are posted around the room that you think is most in need of reform.  Present your argument to the class.  You MUST use evidence from the documents in your Progressive Era DBQ to explain why you think so.

10 Reform Issues Bell Ringer  Is freedom ever free?  Day 1: Immigration Is immigration a good or bad thing? Explain why. Why are some Americans oppose to it? What problems can immigration have on a nation?

11 Objective  Week’s Objective:  Students will be able to analyze primary and/or secondary sources in order to prepare for the performance task  Today’s Objective:  Students will be able to analyze secondary resource in order to understand the social and political issues that defined the Progressive Era through text annotations and small group discussion, through the lens of IMMIGRATION reform
