Lessons from the Life of David Temptation, Fall, Restoration

I Corinthians 10:12-13 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

TEMPTATION—contributing factors David’s position as king He has already disobeyed God’s command for kings (Deut. 17:17 w II Sam. 3:2-5, 5:13,15:16) He has stayed behind from the war, probably for a long time. Why?

TEMPTATION We need to remember we have an enemy I Pet. 5:8 The correct response to sexual temptation is to run from it I Cor. 6:18 ‘epithumia’ deceitful desire that cannot be satisfied Temptation does not equal sin, BUT When external temptation connects with our inner lust, we have a problem James 1:14-15

David’s Temptation He sees He inquires He is conquered

FALL David probably knew Uriah personally 11:3 with II Sam. 23:39 Private sin—Public cover-up Uriah’s actions—the pagan-born Uriah shows more character than David 11:17 Other people, along with Uriah, die 11:26-27 SOP for kings is not ok with God Ps 32:3-5

RESTORATION David is confronted by Nathan—David confesses 12:1 , 7-13 12:14 When God’s people sin, God’s reputation is hurt David’s feelings about his sin Ps 51, 32:5 Notice that no penance is required

RESTORATION Once we have confessed sins, the guilt of our sin is completely taken away I John 1:7 God does not require penance or put us on probation Micah 7:18-19 The guilt for our sins is cleared; the results of our sin/s may endure. David’s family troubles 12:24-25 The birth of Solomon is a sign of God’s complete restoration of David

LESSONS FOR US Temptation is always a danger for us The earlier we confront and face temptation, the less we (and others) will be hurt by it The consequences of sin can be devastating As we turn to God in confession and repentance, we can be forgiven and completely cleansed from even the most serious possible sins
