Trimming the Fat  Before you turn in your final drafts of your narratives, I wanted to give you some practice at trimming the fat in other people’s writing. This HOPEFULLY will make it easier for you to look at your own work with a critical eye.

Second Marking Period  Do you think Melinda’s ex-friends would have talked to her if she tried to talk to them?  Analyze the deterioration of the relationship between Melinda and Heather. Why is it that people sometimes like us more when they can get something out of us? Are the Marthas good friends to Heather? Why or why not?  What should we value in other people? What qualities are important in a person? What do you usually notice first about people? Does that really matter?

What is Figurative Language?  Figurative language is language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphors.  Figures of speech are any expressive use of language, such as metaphor, simile, personification, or antithesis, in which words are used in other than their literal sense, or in other than their ordinary locutions, in order to suggest a picture or image or for other special effect.

Figurative Language Response Journal  THE PURPOSE: To practice identifying examples of figurative language and note the author’s purpose. What is the effect of the figurative language on the reader? In other words: why did the author choose these particular words and phrases?  YOUR TASK: Identify examples of metaphor, simile, imagery, personification, and symbol (one each). Note the page number and give a brief explanation and interpretation about the language  EXAMPLE: Quote (fig. language): …. I cover the mirror with a poster of Maya Angelou…(50) Note Making: This is a powerful symbol as Maya Angelou is not only a famous writer but became silent or mute after a relative raped her, in the memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Homework  Read to page 137  Be ready to turn in your final draft on Thursday.
