3 Transforming lives through learning Purpose of the Fund The Access to Education Fund aims to reduce the barriers to learning experienced by pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is important that learning is about the ability to learn, not the ability to pay, and pupils should not have to miss out on educational experiences for financial reasons. In providing the Access to Education Fund, Scottish schools are being given an opportunity to apply for funding to provide support to these pupils, and their families, and to provide educational experiences which will enhance learning, address existing barriers and help each child reach their full potential.

18 Transforming lives through learning This section must be completed with or by the Head of Establishment. This will prevent duplicate bids and ensure Heads are aware of bids submitted. Email will be the main means of communication with you: please ensure the address is accurate. Local authority reps must be informed of the project application There may be local arrangements in place – please speak to your rep Local authority rep list available at http://bit.ly/ATEF2

19 Transforming lives through learning A clear statement outlining why this proposal cannot be delivered through the school budget Clear rationale outlining why this particular aim is not covered through core school business A summary of what else has been done to try to achieve the aims of the proposal – for example: fundraising, donations, volunteers, training, sharing practise, previous grants A detailed summary of the demographic of the establishment Reference to Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD), Free school Meals Entitlement (FME), or other clear indicator of deprivation/disadvantage

20 Transforming lives through learning Clear rationale: Outline the aims of your proposal What you hope to do Why this intervention has been chosen How this intervention will improve outcomes for the disadvantaged learners you have identified A summary of the specific barriers you are looking to overcome A detailed explanation as to how your proposal will reduce these barriers An indication of how you will know if you have been successful Clear goals identified

21 Transforming lives through learning Give a strategic overview of the proposal: Clear plan of action Preparation Implementing the intervention Who, when, where, how? Sustainability – how will this plan build capacity to maximise on-going sustainability? (Including resourcing) Identification of specific, measureable outcomes (SMART) Means of capturing data and evaluating identified and detailed indication of when, who and how Baseline data Progress data Links to other initiatives or aspects of learning or development within the school that are already part of evaluation or assessment

22 Transforming lives through learning Innovative means of sharing practice Links to local, national and international forums where possible Clear drive and enthusiasm to promote success in establishments
