2 NPSD’s Policy on Books All books used in curricular studies are put before the school board for approval (ex. The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, Fahrenheit 451, etc.). Library books ARE NOT subject to board approval. We have books in the library that have been banned in other communities. Censorship is usually determined by the mores of a community. To my knowledge, there are no books in NP that have been banned totally, but there have been a few removed from the elementary libraries and placed in the middle school libraries. There was that recent challenge of a NP parent who did not want her senior to read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. The student was offered another selection.

3 Top 10 Banned Books of the 20th Century 1984 – George Orwell Ulysses – James Joyce The Naked Lunch – William Burroughs Tropic of Cancer – Henry Miller The Catcher in the Rye – J.D. Salinger Fahrenheit 451 – Ray Bradbury To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee Slaughter-house Five – Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Lady Chatterley’s Lover – D.H. Lawrence The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck
