The independent variable is changed during the experiment. To insure a fair test, a good experiment has only one independent variable. As the scientist changes the independent variable, he or she observes what happensfair test How does the amount of water a plant receives effect its growth rate How does the amount of caffeine a person drinks effect their blood pressure

The dependent variable is the outcome---the effect---that’s measured. How does the amount of water a plant receives effect its growth rate How does the amount of caffeine a person drinks effect their blood pressure

What is the independent variable: This is the thing you will intentionally change each time you do the experiment. What is the dependent variable: This is the measurement you take to see if changing the independent variable made any difference. Talking chips

1. How does background noise levels affect how well we concentrate? 2. Can the color of a person’s hair affect how much static electricity it holds? 3. Does having worms in soil help plants grow better? 4. Does the color of bird seeds affect how much birds will eat it? 5. Can people tell artificial smells from real ones ? 6. Does age affect human reaction times? 7. How does the amount of salt in water (salinity) affect the water’s boiling point? 8. What type of grass seed grows the fastest? 9. Does shoe design affect an athlete’s jumping height? Indicate independent variable by changing font to red. Change dependent variable font to purple. Use tag team procedures.

In experiments the independent variable is the thing that is changed. The dependent variable is the outcome that we measure. It responds to changes made to the independent variable. Will soaking seeds in water prior to planting make them germinate or sprout faster? Does the amount of sunlight a planted seed gets effect how fast it germinates or sprouts? Does the cost of a laundry detergent matter when it comes to how well it works at cleaning clothes? REVIEW

Indicate independent variable by changing font to red. Change dependent variable font to purple. Use tag team procedures. 1. Does the mass of an arrow affect its penetrating power? 2. Does the angle in which an arrow is shot affect how far it will travel? 3. Will phosphate detergents effect the oxygen level in pond water? 4. How does voltage effect the strength of an electromagnet? 5 Are boys or girls better at spelling? 6. Does the flavor of ice cream effect how fast it melts? 7. How does the type of shoes worn during a 100 meter dash effect a runner’s time? 8. Which type of soda (Coke, 7-Up, or Root beer) cleans a dull penny in the fastest time

Most experiments have more than one controlled variable. Some people refer to controlled variables as "constant variables.“ For example, if I wanted to test the effect of sunlight on plant growth, then the only thing which I would change in my experiment is the amount of sunlight the plants received (INDEPENDENT VARIABLE). I would have to control or keep the same such things as…. Type of plant Soil Watering frequency Size of pot Controlled variables are those things which are not changed or remain constant in an experiment.

Which brand of laundry detergent (brand A, B, or C) cleans clothes the best. Use tag team to create a list of 5 things that must be controlled for to ensure a fair test. It is okay if just one person types in what other team mates ideas. However, team leaders must ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute in ABC order. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

The difference between a control group and an experimental group is one group is exposed to the conditions of the experiment and the other is not. You’re leading a research team. Your team developed a new cancer drug which has less side effects than current chemotherapy drugs on the market. You must conduct a study to prove this Group A will not get the new drug. They will be treated the normal way with the current chemotherapy drug on the market Group B will get the new drug Over the next 60 seconds SILENTLY answer these questions to yourself. Then discuss your answers with your team What group was the experimental group What group was the control group What was the purpose of having a control group?

An experimental group is the group in a scientific experiment where the experimental procedure is performed. This group is exposed to the independent variable being tested and the changes observed and recorded You’re leading a research team. Your team developed a new cancer drug which has less side effects than current chemotherapy drugs on the market. You must conduct a study to prove this Group A will not get the new drug. They will be treated the normal way with the current chemotherapy drug on the market Group B will get the new drug Over the next 60 seconds SILENTLY answer thus questions to your self and then answer it as a team What was the independent variable in this experiment? What was the dependent variable?

What is the DEPENDENT variable? What is the INDEPENDENT variable? Who is the EXPERIMENTAL group? Who is the CONTROL group?

A group of middle school students were given a short course in speed-reading. The instructor was curious if a monetary incentive would influence performance on a reading test taken at the end of the course. Half the students were offered $25 for obtaining a certain level of performance on the test, the other half were not offered money. Identify the independent variable: Identify the dependent variable: Identify the experimental group: Identify the control group:

How does the speed at which a person walks/run effect their heart rate? 4. The independent variable is….. 5. The dependent variable is…… 6. Two things I would have to control for are….. Your teacher believes that eating a nutritious breakfast prior to class will improve his student’s academic achievement. He designs an experiment in which 50 of his students eat a highly nutritious breakfast prior to class. They will eat it in the cave prior to going to their first period class. The other 50 students who eat in the cafeteria can have anything they want for breakfast. At the end of the semester he will compare and analyze the data to see if a nutritious breakfast increased academic achievement. 7.What group is the experimental group? 8.What group is the control group?

You work for an engineering company that builds weapons for the military. You are assigned to a research and development team that has a 5 billion dollar contract with the United States Army to build tactical assault cannons. Your specialty is projectiles. Projectiles are things that are shot from guns, bows, cannons, launchers, etc. Your responsibility to your team is to determine the angle at which a projectile will travel the furthest when shot from it launcher. Your problem/question is simple: At what angle will projectiles travel the further when shot from their launcher?

STEP 1 RESEARCH THE PROBLEM You remember reading something about this in college. You remember your professor talking the angle at which projectiles travel the furthest when shot from a launcher. INSTRUCTIONS Use the internet for research. On the next two slides; copy and paste two reliable sources that provide you with the answer to your question. On the third slide, write your hypothesis. Highlight in red the independent variable and highlight in purple the dependent variable.
