4 Topic 1: 200 Question: What economic belief was promoted by the Republican Party & President Hoover at the onset of the Great Depression? Answer: Laissez-Faire Capitalism which basically means they want little to no government interference in the economy (hands-off)

5 Topic 1: 400 Question: What 3 goals were promoted through FDR’s New Deal? (Hint: 3 Rs) Answer: Provide relief for the needy, economic recovery, financial reform

6 Topic 1: 600 Question: What was the New Deal? By putting this program into action, what belief was being demonstrated by FDR? Answer: During his inaugural address Roosevelt promised the people a “New Deal” The New Deal was the name given to FDR’s program designed to combat the Depression. It was showing that he believed that the economy could be turned around through government spending.

7 Topic 1: 800 Question: What mandate was created with FDR’s election in 1932? Answer: Mandate- Through the election of FDR the people were telling him what they wanted. The American people were telling the government that they wanted them to take a proactive role in trying to fix the economy and provide relief.

8 Topic 2: 200 Question: What was the role of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)? Answer: Renovated dams, created jobs, & provided flood control to the Tennessee River Valley

9 Topic 2: 400 Question: Why was it necessary for FDR to declare a “bank holiday”? Answer: The Emergency Banking Relief Act allowed the Treasury department to inspect banks to determine if they were financially sound. This helped to restore confidence in the banking system.

10 Topic 2: 600 Question: What was the intention/ goal of the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)? Why was it criticized? Answer: It raised crop prices by lowering farm production. The government paid farmers to produce less in the hope that reduced supply would boost prices. It was criticized because it favored larger farmers over smaller ones. It distributed payments to landowners, not those who worked the land, the government did little to discourage planters who were reducing their acreage from evicting tenants and sharecroppers and firing field hands.

11 Topic 2: 800 Question: What was FDR’s “Hundred Days”? Answer: The period immediately after Roosevelt’s inauguration. FDR’s first one hundred days were a flurry of activity, which expanded the federal government’s role in dealing with the nation’s economy.

12 Topic 3: 200 Question: What was the role of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and how did it impact young people? Answer: It was designed to provide employment to the millions of young men who could not find jobs in cities. Women were largely excluded from the program. The CCC would plant trees, build reservoirs, develop parks, and improve agricultural irrigation.

13 Topic 3: 400 Question: What were the main causes of the Dust Bowl and how were the victims supported by the federal government? Answer: Over-farming and severe drought. The government provided farmers low-cost loans and parity payments (through the AAA they are trying to get farmers to produce less and receive money from the government for doing this)

14 Topic 3: 600 Question: Who was Huey Long? What did he advocate? Answer: He was Louisiana Senator. He provided the most serious challenge to Roosevelt. Campaigning for President, Long proposed a social program called Share-Our- Wealth, which would make “Every Man A King”. In this program, he advocated drastic wealth redistribution.

15 Topic 3: 800 Question: What was the impact of the National Labor Relations or Wagner Act? What strides did labor make? Answer: This protected the rights of workers to join unions & participate in collective bargaining.

16 Topic 4: 200 Question: Why did FDR’s New Deal and his administration receive criticism? Answer: Conservative critics argued that too much direct relief & control over business had brought socialism to the United States. Liberal critics argued that the New Deal did not provide enough relief.

18 Topic 4: 600 Question: What was the intent of FDR’s Supreme Court Packing Bill? What arguments were used by opponents of this bill? Answer: The bill added six justices to the Supreme Court in order to ensure support for New Deal legislation. Opponents argued that the bill was evidence of the president’s hunger for power.

19 Topic 4: 800 Question: What was the impact of the New Deal on women and minorities? Answer: The New Deal did relatively little to assist African Americans and women. However, the administration was not hostile toward their aspirations.
