PERIMETER, AREA, AND VOLUME BROUGHT TO YOU BY POWERPOINTPROS.COM

PERIMETER

WHAT IS PERIMETER? The Perimeter of a shape is the distance around the edge of a shape. This is the perimeter of this rectangle.

HOW DO I FIND THE PERIMETER OF A SHAPE? Finding the perimeter of a shape is easy! All you have to do is add up the lengths of all of the shape’s sides. If we add up the lengths of all of these sides, we can see that the perimeter of this rectangle is 34 units! 10 7 7

UNITS TO MEASURE PERIMETER Perimeter can be measured in feet, inches, yards, miles, centimeters, millimeters, meters, and kilometers. (There are other units that would work as well.) If the unit of measure is in the labels for perimeter, you should use that unit in your answer. If it isn’t provided, just use the word “Units.”

PRACTICE WITH PERIMETER Find the perimeter of each shape below. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and at the end, we’ll see how you did!

PRACTICE WITH PERIMETER Find the perimeter of each shape below. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and at the end, we’ll see how you did! 1. 7 inches 4 inches

PRACTICE WITH PERIMETER Find the perimeter of each shape below. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and at the end, we’ll see how you did! 2. 10 cm 25 cm

PRACTICE WITH PERIMETER Find the perimeter of each shape below. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and at the end, we’ll see how you did! 3. 4 feet

PRACTICE WITH PERIMETER Find the perimeter of each shape below. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and at the end, we’ll see how you did! 4. 8 8 88

PRACTICE WITH PERIMETER Find the perimeter of each shape below. Write your answers on a sheet of paper and at the end, we’ll see how you did! 5. 8 yards 6 yards 7 yards

PERIMETER—ANSWERS 1. 22 inches 2. 70 cm 3. 12 feet 4. 32 units 5. 34 yards Did you get them all correct???

REVIEW OF PERIMETER The Perimeter of a shape is the distance around the edge of a shape. You can use units such as feet, inches, yards, centimeters, meters, and millimeters to measure perimeter. To find the perimeter of a shape, add up the lengths of all of the shape’s sides.

AREA

WHAT IS AREA? The Area of a shape is the space or surface enclosed inside a 2-dimensional shape. This is the area of this rectangle.

HOW DO I FIND THE AREA OF A SHAPE? Finding the area of a shape depends on the shape itself. There are different ways of finding area for different shapes. We won’t study all of those different formulas in this lesson, since there are a lot of them.

UNITS TO MEASURE AREA Area can be measured in square feet (or feet 2 ), square inches, square yards, square miles, square centimeters, square millimeters, square meters, and even square kilometers. (There are other units that would work as well.) If the unit of measure is provided, you should use that unit in your answer. If it isn’t provided, just use “Units squared,” or “square units.”

REVIEW OF AREA The Area of a shape is the space or surface enclosed inside a 2-dimensional shape. Area can be measured in units such as inches squared, square feet, centimeters 2, etc.

VOLUME

WHAT IS VOLUME? So far, we have been working with 2-dimensional objects such as rectangles, triangles, pentagons, and so on. But Volume doesn’t deal with 2-dimensional objects. Instead, it deals with 3-dimensional objects.

WHAT IS VOLUME? Volume is the amount of 3-dimensional space an object occupies.

HOW DO I FIND THE VOLUME OF A 3- DIMENSIONAL SOLID? Finding the volume of a 3-D solid, like the area of a shape, depends on the solid itself. There are different ways of finding volume for different 3-dimensional solids. We won’t study all of those different formulas in this lesson, since they can get quite complicated.

UNITS TO MEASURE VOLUME Volume can be measured in cubic feet (or feet 3 ), cubic inches, cubic yards, cubic miles, cubic centimeters, cubic millimeters, cubic meters, and even cubic kilometers. (There are other units that would work as well.) If the unit of measure is provided, you should use that unit in your answer. If it isn’t provided, just use “Units cubed,” or “cubic units.”

REVIEW OF VOLUME The Volume of a shape is the amount of 3-dimensional space that a 3-dimensional solid occupies. Volume can be measured in units such as inches cubed, cubic feet, centimeters 3, etc.
