A. Mistake #1: The Continental System 1.In 1806, Napoleon attempted to blockade British ports to hurt their economy. 2.Napoleon wanted the continent to rely less on trade with Britain (he wanted the continent to become more self-sufficient).

3. But the British put their own blockade around Europe, which ultimately weakened Europe’s economy more!

B. Mistake #2: The Peninsular War 1. Napoleon made his brother king of Spain in 1808 2. The Spanish people were loyal to their own king (they demonstrated extreme nationalism). 3. The peasant fighters called guerillas fought against Napoleon. 4. Now other European peoples turned against the French!

C. Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia 1. Russia refused to remain in the Continental System, so Napoleon decided to invade. 2. Napoleon assembled a Grand Army of over 400,000 men, who entered Russia. 3. But the Russians retreated and followed a scorched- Earth policy (they burned their villages, their grain fields, and killed livestock). Why? 4. Lacking food, Napoleon’s troops left Moscow to return home, but they faced terrible winter (!) conditions 5. Only 10,000 of the original troops were left!

A. After Napoleon’s defeat in Russia, other European nations rose up to attack the weakened French army B. Paris was captured in 1814 C. Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba (tiny island off the coast of Italy). D. Louis XVIII was restored to the French monarchy, but had very little support.

E. Ten months after his exile, Napoleon escaped and returned to France and took back the throne (this short period is known as “The Hundred Days”) F. Napoleon led a final campaign in Belgium, where he was ultimately defeated in the Battle of Waterloo. G. Finally, he was shipped off to the remote island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic, where he later died.

 Did he die a hero, or live long enough to become a villain?
